Thicker edges (40mm+) give more power and a bigger sweet spot. Modern bats have 38โ44mm edges for maximum hitting.
Grains are vertical lines on the bat face. 6โ10 straight grains = better quality. Fewer grains = younger wood = harder but less performance.
New English willow bats must be knocked in with a bat mallet for 4โ6 hours before use to compress fibres and prevent cracking.
